Background of the Study

Student records management is a critical function in higher education institutions, as it involves the storage, retrieval, and maintenance of students' academic information. Efficient record management ensures accuracy, accessibility, and security, which are essential for academic administration, student progression, and institutional credibility (Adeyemi & Yusuf, 2023). However, many Nigerian universities, including Federal University, Lafia, continue to rely on centralized and manual systems for managing student records. These systems are often prone to errors, loss of data, security breaches, and inefficiencies in retrieving and updating records.

One of the primary challenges in student records management at Federal University, Lafia, is the risk of data loss due to system failures, human errors, or cyberattacks. With the increasing demand for secure and verifiable academic records, universities need to adopt advanced digital solutions that enhance data integrity and accessibility (Okonkwo & Ibrahim, 2024). Additionally, students often face difficulties in accessing their academic records promptly due to bureaucratic processes and administrative delays. Employers and other institutions also struggle to verify student credentials efficiently, as the current verification methods require direct engagement with university officials, which can be time-consuming.

Blockchain technology offers a promising solution to these challenges by providing a decentralized, immutable, and secure digital ledger for storing and managing student records. Unlike traditional databases, blockchain ensures that records cannot be altered or deleted once they are recorded, thus preventing tampering and unauthorized modifications (Olawale & Musa, 2023). With blockchain-based student records management, Federal University, Lafia, can enhance data security, streamline academic processes, and enable instant verification of student credentials.

Given the limitations of the current record-keeping methods at Federal University, Lafia, this study proposes the development of a Blockchain-Based Student Records Management System. The system will provide a secure, transparent, and efficient way of storing, retrieving, and verifying student records. By leveraging blockchain technology, the system will enhance trust, reduce administrative burdens, and ensure the integrity of academic records.

Statement of the Problem

The traditional student records management system at Federal University, Lafia, is plagued by inefficiencies, security vulnerabilities, and administrative challenges. The reliance on centralized databases and paper-based documentation makes the system prone to errors, data breaches, and record loss. Students frequently experience delays in accessing their transcripts, certificates, and other academic records, while administrators struggle with record retrieval and verification requests (Adebayo & Salisu, 2023).

Another significant issue is the challenge of verifying academic records. Employers and other institutions often require a manual verification process, which involves direct communication with university officials. This process is slow, costly, and susceptible to fraud, as some individuals have been able to forge or manipulate records without detection (Okonkwo & Musa, 2024).

Furthermore, the security of student records is a growing concern, as cyber threats and hacking incidents have increased in recent years. Without a secure system, student data remains vulnerable to unauthorized access, deletion, or corruption, which can have severe consequences for both students and the institution (Ogunleye & Salisu, 2024).

To address these challenges, this study proposes the development of a Blockchain-Based Student Records Management System for Federal University, Lafia. The system will provide a decentralized, tamper-proof, and efficient approach to managing student records, ensuring enhanced security, transparency, and accessibility.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design a Blockchain-Based Student Records Management System for Federal University, Lafia, that ensures secure, transparent, and efficient storage and retrieval of student records.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of blockchain technology in enhancing data security and integrity in student records management.

  3. To assess the impact of a decentralized student records management system on administrative efficiency and record verification processes.

Research Questions

  1. What are the major challenges associated with student records management at Federal University, Lafia?

  2. How can a blockchain-based system improve the security, efficiency, and accessibility of student records?

  3. What are the potential benefits and limitations of implementing a decentralized student records management system?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The implementation of a Blockchain-Based Student Records Management System will significantly improve the security and integrity of student records.

  2. There is a positive correlation between blockchain adoption and improved efficiency in student record retrieval and verification processes.

  3. A decentralized records management system will enhance transparency and reduce administrative workload in Federal University, Lafia.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it introduces an innovative solution for addressing the inefficiencies and security vulnerabilities in student records management at Federal University, Lafia. By leveraging blockchain technology, the proposed system will ensure that student records are immutable, easily verifiable, and secure. The study will benefit students by providing instant access to their academic records, while administrators will experience reduced workload and enhanced efficiency in managing records. Employers and other institutions will also benefit from a streamlined and reliable verification process. Additionally, this research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on blockchain applications in higher education.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is limited to the design and implementation of a Blockchain-Based Student Records Management System for Federal University, Lafia. It will focus on evaluating the usability, security, and effectiveness of the system in improving student records management. Data collection will be restricted to students, university administrators, and employers within the institution’s network. The study will not extend to other universities or student record systems outside Federal University, Lafia.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Blockchain Technology: A decentralized digital ledger that securely records and verifies transactions without the need for a central authority.

  2. Student Records Management System: A platform designed to store, manage, and retrieve academic records such as transcripts, certificates, and grades.

  3. Decentralized Ledger: A record-keeping system that is distributed across multiple nodes, ensuring security and data integrity.

  4. Data Integrity: The assurance that stored data remains accurate, consistent, and unaltered over time.

  5. Record Verification: The process of confirming the authenticity of academic records for employment, further education, or administrative purposes.
